Dubs| Am I the only one?|

(1/4) > >>

Lockstock:
I'm a sub guy, like that is all I watch on my pc .. but sometimes when they play something decent on adult swim, It feels good to just pay full attention to the animation and not have to glance down at the text.

Does anyone agree?

Dubs get constantly ripped on, but they are hilarious to me .. and you get to watch it w/o any visual distractions (subs).

Don't get me wrong, I still think subs are 10 levels above because of the acting and it's more dramatic, but don't dubs serve there purpose?

I'm interested to see what others think ..

I have watched quite a few dubs before and there have been some I have liked, although out of fear of getting hated on I won't name any specific series. ;D I think people just go into watching it with such unreasonable expectations or bias that there is no way the dub can live up to it no matter how good it is.

videogam3maniac:
I remember back when I was younger I used to watch shows that I now know as anime on TV and I thought that they were just regular cartoons and that they were supposed to be like that. Then of course came the later realization that it was originally in Japanese. After that I got used to watching subs instead of dubbed versions. Sometimes I think that some of the voices in the dubs end up being a little better sometimes, but most of the time I think that the voices are either bad or are just plain hilarious compared to the Japanese ones.

Celtic Warrior:
I watch dubs all the time. I can't stand subs.

Brink-of-Time:
Personally I do it both ways whenever possible. Its hard to come by good english voice actors, and so alot of dubs I've seen are about 40-60% the same quality as the original voice cast. Of course alot of that has to do with budget.
There are however some really good english dubs of shows. Cowboy Bebop, Bastard!!, Eureka 7, Ghost in The Shell, .hack, and some others.

I still like subs though. Mainly because, sometimes there are expressions, words, jokes, references, or jargon that only the Japanese would get unless some description is given with it. So when you watch the Japanese version with subs, alot of groups with explain what is going on, which is turn makes that scene more enjoyable.

There are also some shows that are plain horrible in dubs. Initial D, is probably by far, the worst one I've come across. A decent show by itself, but when I watched the english version it sucked. They changed the original Eurobeat soundtrack to some weird indie rap & rock stuff. And the voice actors were plain bad.

The same can be applied to subs. Sometimes the quality is bad due to age (Boys Over Flowers for example), or the sub group isn't very good.

Still, I think people show watch both english dubs and japanese w/ subs to get the full feel of it.
